In the article Better Golfers See Bigger Hole, Jessica K. Witt performs an experiment to see the effects of how a golfers perception of the size of the holes in relation to how they performed. Turns out, the golfers who had better scores tended to think that the holes were larger than the perception of the holes golfers who played worse games had. Now does this mean that imagining bigger holes makes you play better or does playing better make you see bigger holes?
